The Data Journalism Academy is Africa’s represents an initiative of Code for South Africa’s data literacy programme for data-driven journalism. It aims to equip participants with skills that will lead to sustainable changes within their newsrooms. The training modules of our short courses are aimed at equipping participants with the skills and tools that enable them to access and explore public data.

Key outcomes

Ability to source, clean, analyse, and identify stories using data
Ability to visualise data and work with developers to produce high quality digital journalism
Ability to work in a data newsroom with a data journalism unit
Develop a data-driven multimedia story portfolio

The Data Journalism Academy gives working journalists the opportunity to gain practical data journalism skill-sets, equipping them with the skills to deliver compelling data-driven multimedia stories.

Code for South Africa is actively involved in ongoing projects that promote innovation in the media space through the use of data-driven storytelling and the academy plays an important role in achieving this.

Our training courses provide working journalists with the opportunity to gain practical data journalism skill-sets that will equip them to deliver compelling data-driven multimedia stories. Our team of trainers is made up of a combination of experienced and award winning journalists, coders, data wranglers, analysts and content specialists. Modules include specialist topic focus sessions taught by high in-house and guest lecturers from local and international newsrooms.
