Description

This course introduces non-GIS users to the concept of mapping data as a method of data visualisation.  The course covers basic principles of mapping data as a visualisation tool.  The primary goal of the course is to enable users to get their data onto a map with open-source online mapping tools to create, geocode and display geographic data, and to highlight the power of mapping as a data visualisation tool.  The course includes some basic theory around principles of mapping as well as a practical workshop that actively engages participants in hands-on working sessions.

  • Explain in which context map visualisations are appropriate
  • Access & apply the required data formats for the relevant mapping applications
  • Utilise open-source online mapping applications to map geographic data
  • Explore different map visualisation techniques and to understand which technique applies to which data format
  • Identify the power of map visualisation as an element of storytelling
  • Identify the unique ability of data mapping to highlight trends in data

Julia Renouprez is a spatial data analyst with 18 years’ experience in geographic data analytics.  Julia has extensive experience in training GIS users in GIS software user training, as well as non-GIS users in data pipeline and geographic data visualisation training.  Julia is a former School of Data fellow, and works for Code for South Africa as a Data Wrangler and Project Manager, as well as training and mentoring through the Data Journalism Academy.

This course is a hands on workshop.  Participants must have a laptop with an active google account.
